Critics Consensus

After the heady sci-fi thrills of District 9, Elysium is a bit of a comedown for director Neill Blomkamp, but on its own terms, it delivers just often enough to satisfy.

What promises to be a whipsmart sci-fi thriller becomes a conventional spectacle where technology is a gimmick, the action blurs into messy scenes of hyperkinetic editing and the battle against the system becomes an action cartoon. Go to Full Review

The film isn’t a failure, the evocation of the squalid livings of those on earth is an interesting one, and the gulf between health care and general life for those who are poor vs those who are wealthy is ample fodder for a science fiction film to draw on Go to Full Review

gungi T @WhatWhere 7h A film packed with potential, however, it never quite manages to deliver a compelling plot, instead getting somewhat lost in over-the-top action sequences that are staged in a rather frantic and hectic manner. The endless, rushed camera movements come across as exhausting and tiring. Added to this are clichéd character developments featuring caricatured, one-dimensional villains who are driven solely by violence and destruction. The conflict is established as soon as the movie begins. Elysium embodies the utopia of aristocracy, whilst Earth remains a capitalist underworld that drains people of hope. The robots – unlike the friendly models in Elysium – serve as an extension of the law, monitoring citizens and maintaining order. From the outset, the movie's overt social commentary lacks a profound staging and subtlety, which ultimately undermines the natural development of the hero’s sacrifice for the greater good. I never felt very invested in any characters and there were some plot holes towards the end that made little sense. See more Lucas C @RackDacks Apr 27 Incredibly disappointing coming from District 9, its messaging is so over the top and 1:1 and extreme that it's hard to take it seriously. I think the perfect example of this is that one rich evil guy (shocker) worrying about the sheets or whatever rather than the radiation leak or the health of his workers. I mean like. What? WE GET IT, he's evil and rich, but it's like a 10 year old's idea of what an evil and rich guy would be worried about rather than whether or not production would be stopped. Magic healing beds that only the rich have, guess what they represent? See more Márcio T @RT85696313 Apr 27 A deep critic about society and it's inequality, similar to the gender of cyberpunk, even though it's not the same thing. I can see some flaws in the movie; there's some cliche, some fillers to add time, the character development is not that advanced, but... It's not a movie below 65%, i can't figure out why people "hated" this movie so much, acting like there's no other "slop" and consumerism movies to hate. It's a great movie, it has art, culture, critic, and the most important of all: a message. Maybe it was just misunderstood? If they focused more on realism and less in action, it would be a fine piece of art, just like blade runner (1982). See more Read all reviews
