Critics Consensus

An overblown thriller with formulaic action scenes and poor acting.

Arnie's not taking any chances this time, and the result is the most questionably repulsive big-budget film in recent memory.

At least the finale is explosive and chaotic – but again ignoring many of the concepts it previously established for the sake of close-calls and last-second rescues.

End of Days is never interesting and usually silly, but it might help Arnold get some momentum if he really does run for the governorship of California. At least he'll get the anti-Satan vote.

The fatal flaw lies in the fact that the Devil, especially when personified by a talented and handsome actor like End of Days's Gabriel Byrne, is actually much more compelling and personable than the hero.

"End of Days" is one of those supernaturally themed movies in which evil is a major focal point and is represented as a force to be reckoned with, whereas good is both understated and in short supply. Here Christianity, the church, faith, etc. are (as usual) depicted as impotent and borderline fraudulent. However, at the same time it can't be denied that everything in the movie is directly subordinate to the Christian sphere of ideas. This creates the obvious problem of a narrative which constantly undermines its own core concepts, portraying them as misguided and lame, while simultaneously insisting you believe them. I'm not religious and I certainly have my own negative opinions about religion, but this type of theming is unoriginal and tiresome. The hero is of course an irreverent drunk who has a grudge against God, but also doesn't really believe in him... So yeah. I also found that Gabriel Byrne's portrayal of Satan was far to petty and smug to actually be scary.

This movie was great! Good to see Arnie in a different light. Unsure how the critics get it so wrong so often, they are like fussy infants at dinner.

Arnie rockt.

The critics are being dumb again. This was a fun and entertaining action movie. Maybe the critics forgot to turn off their brains or didn't like the images of Jesus.
