Critics Consensus

Big on special effects but short on laughs, Evan Almighty underutilizes a star-studded cast that includes Steve Carell and Morgan Freeman.

Evan Almighty is an ungainly melding of religious paean, big-budget studio comedy, feel-good family niceties and summer-blockbuster spectacle.

But most of these faults are due to the film’s commitment to the philosophical bit. Also, they named the Noah-character’s wife “Joan” (Lauren Graham) because her husband is building an ark.

What Evan Almighty shows is that one act of random kindness can indeed make a difference.

Brilliant. Star studded cast, well written and directed. Great cinematography and visually stunning. Steve Carell always shines in awkward / socially out of depth characters and this is no exception. Whole cast very capable and convincing in character. Fun storytelling with enough action, lots of emotion, intrigue, drama, suspense and twists. Entertaining, sometimes hilarious and captivating

While the use of biblical references may feel somewhat lazy, Evan Almighty plays more like a spin-off than a direct sequel, which may disappoint some fans of the series. Nevertheless, Steve Carell’s masterful comedic performance delivers enough entertainment to keep most audiences thoroughly amused.

Steve Carrell is so sweet and funny, Wanda Sykes is hilarious--I was laughing out loud almost constantly-- & Morgan Freeman and John Goodman are amazing as always. I'm very shocked by the low marks here, and literally created an account on Rotten Tomatoes just to leave a positive review. My family and I absolutely adored this movie!
