Logan D @Greynomad38 Jan 3 A mother (Sarita Choudhury) living in India tries to warn her overseas daughter (Sunita Mani) about the new man in her life. Despite being from Blumhouse, this isn't a horror movie at all. It's barely a thriller. It's more of a mother-daughter conflict film with some supernatural elements tossed in. I did enjoy the cultural specificity and especially the strong grounding performance from Choudhury. It does suffer from being dialogue heavy. I love actress, Sarita Choudhury (she is also in Fallout), and watching her accent and acting skills is always incredible. I wear an evil eye bracelet that I have had since I was a child (I am Jewish and we believe in the evil eye's power, as well). I loved the astrology readings (a person's entire astrological map for one and only one individual), which Jewish people also believe in, though, it is no longer a common practice for matchmaking. I studied abroad in India decades ago when I was in College and have always been quasi-obsessive about Indian culture, regions and religions, their Holy Books, the history behind the vast Indian religions, Bollywood dance and cinema and the majority of my close friends in College were Indian, mostly Punjabi, but some Gujurati, some South Indians, like as in, from Chennai, I had Hindu friends from Delhi who spoke Hindu, primarily, Bengali friends, as well as people from Hyderabad, Goa, Rajasthan, Jaipur, and more, which deeply factors in to my opinion of the movie. I saw it twice because I truly thought it was so good. I have seen others, a majority, rated this movie "so-so," but perhaps knowing a little something about Indian culture might influence your opinion differently. For example, it is uncommon for Indian women to have had serious boyfriends before the husband they will marry. Indian fathers are very sweet and loving to their daughters and commonly the women rule and overrule the Household, it is very difficult for an Indian mother to not constantly worry about their daughters, and unless studying abroad in The United States, it is almost unheard of for an Indian mother to live away from her children, but more so, their daughters. There are many aspects and reasons that go into this inherent relationship, but on turn, an Indian mother makes her Indian daughter in to a very strong and independent person who is able to stand on her own, more so than sons. This is how the culture perpetuates a very intelligent, evolved, and all-knowing wise women. I think if people who watch this movie have many Indian friends, will "get it" and appreciate the movie much more. See more Andy B @AndyB6816 02/03/2025 In summary, a controlling and concerned mother becomes convinced that her daughter’s new boyfriend is the reincarnation of her own dead lover. This could be a great horror story. It could also be a great thriller. It could just as well be a lifetime drama focussing on obsession and superstition. The issue with Evil Eye is that it doesn’t seem to know which it is. I’ve seem a great deal of praise for the acting - which I agree with. I’ve also seem praise for the portrayal of the family dynamic - which I don’t agree with as it is extremely cliched. An Indian mother who is overly controlling? Hardly original. The film spends a long time on the family drama, but without anything to ramp up the tension. By the time the mothers suspicions are revealed to be true, they seem as if they are in the wrong film. Horror and thriller fans have lost interest and the people watching the family drama are disappointed at the introduction of the supernatural. Nice idea but a solid miss.
