Everett Stone (Dermot Mulroney) wants to bring his girlfriend, Meredith Morton (Sarah Jessica Parker), to meet his bohemian Connecticut family at Christmas. Straitlaced Meredith, feeling she needs backup, asks her sister Julie (Claire Danes), to come along. Hoping to win the approval of her boyfriend's parents Sybil (Diane Keaton) and Kelly (Craig T. Nelson) and the rest of the family, instead Meredith succeeds only in highlighting her uptight personality and making Everett doubt his intentions.

The Family Stone works hard to warm the cockles of our hearts. The cast is attractive. The sentiments are commendable. But the love Bezucha wants us to feel for the family couldn't possibly compete with the love they already feel for themselves. Go to Full Review Andrew Sarris Observer 01/05/2006

Fat L @Bonnie123 Mar 9 Loved the movie. When two people pair up with the wrong person and then find the person they should be with. Don't hold on to something that isn't working, find something that does. I thought Diane Keaton was a terrible character. Who talks about their daughter like that "Chad popped her cherry". Yuck. Yuck. Yuck. I've never talked about my daughter like that. "Oh you don't screw?". Very odd conversation from a mom. Still liked the storyline though. The characters were likeable. The family were awful to her , clearly she was anxious to impress. Worst of all, her boyfriend did absolutely nothing to back her up. He did not have her back and fed her to the wolves.
