Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick) has an uncanny skill at cutting classes and getting away with it. Intending to make one last duck-out before graduation, Ferris calls in sick, "borrows" a Ferrari, and embarks on a one-day journey through the streets of Chicago. On Ferris' trail is high school principal Rooney (Jeffrey Jones), determined to catch him in the act.

Critics Consensus

Matthew Broderick charms in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, a light and irrepressibly fun movie about being young and having fun.

It's a fantasy about escape and growing up that's played out in Hollywood terms. It's not rebellion—it's entertainment.

It is the most surreal Hughes movie yet, and thus the most disjointed, but there are some truly memorable comic moments buried here.

Broderick's performance is a little too cute for my taste, but Alan Ruck does well with Cameron, the boy of many fears.

This is a film that can afford little diversions. This is a film with laughter to give away.

Still enjoyable 40 years later. Watched it in the theater for its anniversary. A good day off

After 40 years, the film remains clever, unique (if you ignore Parker Lewis), and thought provoking (regarding Cameron's arc). It was interesting to see a group of teens discussing what they liked about this movie outside the theater following the screening.
