When college senior Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) steps in for her sick roommate to interview prominent businessman Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) for their campus paper, little does she realize the path her life will take. Christian, as enigmatic as he is rich and powerful, finds himself strangely drawn to Ana, and she to him. Critics Consensus

While creatively better endowed than its print counterpart, Fifty Shades of Grey is a less than satisfying experience on the screen.

Fifty Shades of Grey delivers, however ponderously, on its promise of pop transgressiveness.

This alien quality is what makes Dornan so effective as Christian.

At the screening I attended, they distributed Fifty Shades fashioned blindfolds before the showing. You wouldn't be worse off wearing it during the film.

I expect most viewers would have rather seen this franchise taken in a different direction. How about Fifty Shades of The Grey, with the two vapid protagonists forced to contend with Liam Neeson and a pack of ravenous wolves?

As dodgy, ludicrous and funny, as the film might be, as a public spectacle it’s probably not as embarrassing as being seen reading the book

I love this movie. I read the books. I honestly pictured the Mail character to be different but he wasn’t disappointing. I enjoyed for just like the book.

0 (zero) erotic. Watch "Tokyo Decadence", "History of O" or "Henry and June" instead.

No matter what you say, this film (based on the first book) stirred up quite a lot—both externally and internally—and ignited various physical sensations, desires, curiosities, and fantasies. Is it a "BDSM-lite" or "accessible" take on the subject? Yes. Is it a well-worn, clichéd story—the innocent, poor girl swept off her feet by a handsome, wealthy man? It is. But that is precisely why it works and why it resonated with so many people. The film couldn't really be much better than the book, given that everything was overseen by the author. Setting aside any expectations regarding whether the characters look like their literary counterparts, the film does a solid job of recreating the scenes—especially the settings—with great attention to detail. The actors also commit well to the characters' most intimate moments. For me, it’s the best of the trilogy.
