Assembled from unseen archive footage, rare offcuts and masses of hilarious junk-culture detail from the pre-punk '70s, this inspired collage is as much passionate social history as rockumentary. Intercutting a touching, never-before-seen Sid Vicious interview with contemporary quotes from the surviving Pistols -- wittily filmed, like renegade villains, in silhouette -- Temple exposes the band's human side as never before.

Critics Consensus

The Filth and the Fury is a complete and completely unabashed look at The Sex Pistols, shot in suitably propulsive punk fashion.

To see this film's footage from the '70s is to see the beginning of much of pop and fashion iconography for the next two decades. Go to Full Review

"The Filth and the Fury" is the first punk rock documentary to lay out, in an editorial style, a thorough linear account of the last major musical movement of the twentieth century by way of that genre's fiercest example. Go to Full Review

Sep 24, 2016 Julien Temple documentary on The Sex Pistols is a follow-up to his 1980 documentary on the Pistols, "The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle, which was criticized for being too focused on manager Malcolm McLaren's version of the band's rise and fall. This film also documents the rise and fall of the band, but this time includes much more commentary from the band members themselves, particularly John Lydon. The film features a lot of vintage footage from back in the day, which is a lot of fun. I do have to say I was annoyed by the contemporary interviews done in silhouette, which seemed an unnecessary stylistic. But still, the music holds up and the overall film is a lot of fun capturing the raw and gritty feel of the 80s British punch scene. See more
Aug 31, 2016 Julien Temple revisits the Sex Pistols with this documentary. It is fairly one-sided since John Lydon's perspective on events is about 85% of what you hear, but Lydon seems a lot more reliable than the Malcolm McClaren POV offered in "The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle". There's a ton of material here ... pure gold for fans. See more
