The Gheorghius, a devout Romanian Norwegian couple, resettle in a village set in a distant fjord where they become close to their neighbors, the Halbergs. Their children bond despite their different education. When adolescent Elia Gheorghiu shows up at school with some bruises on her body, the community asks itself if the traditional education that the Gheorghiu children get from their parents would have anything to do with it.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Presenting a knotty moral dilemma and refusing to provide easy answers, Cristian Mungiu's superbly well-acted Fjord has a chilly surface that belies a heated humanity beneath the frost.

“Fjord,” the latest provocation from Romania’s Cristian Mungiu, is good for starting conversations if not arguments, but it’s a little tricker than it seems on the surface. Go to Full Review

Fjord, a provocative drama from Romanian director Cristian Mungiu, tackles the difficult subject of child abuse, turning it into a springboard for examining cultural conflict and rigid institutional power. Go to Full Review

The kind of film that will leave audiences debating its central conflict long after it's over. But [director] Cristian Mungiu covers so many bases in this complex script, it works against the emotional impact. Go to Full Review

Anup 3 hrs ago The movie is well-acted and well-done with great scenery, I just didn't find it a compelling plot-line and it went on for 2 1/2 hours. It was a disturbing story (parents accused of child abuse for merely slapping their children) that just kind of dragged and didn't have enough of a twist to keep me motivated. Granted, the subtitles weren't working at my theater so it's possible the Norweigian dialogue was more compelling than I knew! It does bring out the theme of cultural differences. The father is from Romania where he didn't think twice to slap a misbehaving child while it's considered arrestable child abuse (apparently) in Norway. See more Erik 2 days ago I thought it was very good. Beautiful cinematography. Strong acting from the two leads. Some of the dialogue felt a little constructed and I'm not sure if this accurately represents Norwegian authorities. See more Mary 2 days ago Very well done - showing both sides fairly and realistically and raised very important issues. See more Ankur P 4 days ago Slow, gripping, unsatisfying See more Andro 4 days ago Controversial reality of so called civilized world! See more jesse v 5 days ago other than this film being tangled by 10 different studios, this started as a slice of life of a European family living their lives. then the school staff gets wind of the kids being disciplined differently at home, and then the story becomes a spotlight on social issues of CPS in all of Europe. this movie is mostly the antithesis of Bad Apples. bizarrely, there was a super wide shot where you have to play Where's Waldo to find who's talking. the Norwegians always make the lives of other Europeans difficult. this film spells out ALL the nuance of this social issue where it became less engaging after the first act. the ending is basically the parents realizing that they could just go back to their home country with no reprecussions.
