Critics Consensus

Gentle and nostalgic, From Up on Poppy Hill is one of Studio Ghibli's sweeter efforts -- and if it doesn't push the boundaries of the genre, it remains as engagingly lovely as Ghibli fans have come to expect.

A gently lyrical diversion for Ghibli die-hards ... a gentle snooze for others. Go to Full Review Tara Brady Irish Times Aug 2, 2013

It ... arrives with the vast reserves of patience, optimism and artistry we've come to expect from this studio. Go to Full Review Grace Han Asian Movie Pulse May 25, 2022

Poppy Hill” is beautiful, but more dull than expected. It would be nice to see Goro Miyazaki engage in stories that actually resonate with him, rather than to follow his father’s script (or footsteps). Go to Full Review Clement Tyler Obropta Film Inquiry Jul 17, 2021
It might not be one of the most well-regarded or well-produced of the studio's films, but it's a high point in Gorō's career and one of the final brushstrokes in his father's, and that's more than enough to justify a visit to Poppy Hill. Go to Full Review Jordan M. Smith IONCINEMA.com Nov 12, 2020
Though From Up On Poppy Hill lacks the magic or pure emotion of some of Ghibli's finest work, Goro's sophomore feature still stands as a testament to why hand drawn animation should never perish in the face of digital wizardry. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

diogo13 T @Tua_mera Jul 12, 2026 One of Studio Ghibli’s quietest and most underrated gems. Stepping away from magic to embrace a realistic historical drama set in 1960s Yokohama, the film delivers a beautiful story about youth, memory, and the importance of preserving the past. The background animation is soothing and stunning, and the jazz-infused soundtrack is fantastic. A work filled with sensitivity, nostalgia, and a great deal of heart. See more ang T @notangelali May 1, 2026 Amazing movie I love the slowness of the life and I love the whole era in the city. It kind of makes you fall in love with the city and I love the relationship between the main two main characters in the house. I think it was really creative and overall pretty good movie. See more Bret M. @BretM-3 Apr 7, 2026 Studio Ghibli movies are typically very weird, but this movie is oddly normal. No bathhouse, no Catbus, no Giant Moving Castle, just a simple story about young romance and saving The Latin Quarter. Despite its simplicity, it is still a wildly entertaining movie. Umi and Shun are great characters that the audience cares for. The voice cast also does a great job in this one. With the voice cast and the excellent writing, you really do begin to love these characters. And the score is GREAT!! It just brings me peace and reminds me of a hot summer day with a cool breeze. So overall, I highly recommend this film. If you’ve liked other Studio Ghibli movies, you’ll probably like this one too. And if they’re usually too weird for you, this movie will be a nice breath of fresh air. See more Li C. @ThePlucker1995 Mar 24, 2026 I enjoyed myself the entirety of this slice of life. Such a wondrous gift to exist during a time where we can consume these types of movies. Instant dopamine. What my anxiety riddled body needed.
