After the death of her famous opera-singing aunt, Paula (Ingrid Bergman) is sent to study in Italy to become a great opera singer as well. While there, she falls in love with the charming Gregory Anton (Charles Boyer). The two return to London, and Paula begins to notice strange goings-on: missing pictures, strange footsteps in the night and gaslights that dim without being touched. As she fights to retain her sanity, her new husband's intentions come into question.

My wife and I watched the first half of this movie the other day and agreed we would finish it together but then she caught me the next day finishing it on my own so I just told her she was imaging things and actually nothing was playing on the T.V. and she was going insane just like her mother. Anyway GASLIGHT was okay. Hard to find old movies like this relatable.

4.0 stars; A genuine classic thriller. The Gothic presentation maintained an eerie tension throughout the film, keeping the audience on the edge of their seats. This film's title has inched its way into common language as a synonym for deceit. The film was a 40s critical success with a Best Actress Award for a young Ingrid Bergman, and Best Supporting Role nominations for Charles Boyer and an 18-year-old Angela Lansbury.

Ingrid Bergman’s outstanding performance is the key to the film’s success. Her subtle yet sincere portrayal of Paula brings forth the storyline’s tense atmosphere and suspenseful drama. Gaslight kept me on the edge of my seat for its entirety, proving it’s a timeless piece that can be enjoyed by a modern audience.

It does, at times, feel like a B-grade 'Rebecca' in its pseudo-Gothic atmosphere and what appears to be the build-up of the mental deterioration of the female character before another plot is revealed, but George Cukor's tight direction and personality over 'Gaslight' makes it a solid success. Ingrid Bergman's character is written to be a great deal too stupid and wishy-washy even for her time, which is my main problem, but she manages to make it work within a story that you can tell definitely began on the stage.

Synopsis
