Celebrated directorial duo the Ross Brothers (Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets and Contemporary Color) turn their pioneering hybrid approach to the cinematic road trip with GASOLINE RAINBOW. Undoubtedly candid yet deeply loving, this is an expansive portrait of the new generation as told in their own words. With high school in the rearview, five teenagers from inland Oregon embark on one last adventure. Piling into a van with a busted tail light, their mission takes them to a place they've never been -- the Pacific coast, five hundred miles away. The plan, in full: "Fuck it." Through desert wilderness, industrial backwaters, and city streets, they connect with outsiders on the fringes and discover their lives will be determined by the trails they blaze themselves. These are forgotten kids from a forgotten town, but they have their freedom and they have each other, hurtling toward an unknowable future -- and The Party at the End of the World. A SXSW and Venice Film Festival selection, GASOLINE RAINBOW depicts a wild and true coming-of-age. I will be totally honest and say I did not make it to the end of this movie. I watched it as part of a film festival and only lasted 1 hour before I had to walk out. It was just so dull. None of the conversations went anywhere, nothing interesting was happening in the plot. It was just a bunch of kids running around. Others have spoken positively about the cinematography - in my personal opinion this is not sufficient to hold someone’s attention for two hours.

Film Breakdown: 1/3 through: Absolute chaos, and in the worse way. Absolutely no plot to follow with little to no indepth character development. 2/3's of the way through: the temptation to stop watching becomes almost too much to bear. 3/3: this film sticks a landing even rockier than the camera work. Absolutely insufferable film, I would recommend skipping on this one.

Brilliant. Another example of how less is so often more in filmmaking. Without CGI or other "tricks", without a big budget, this film is left with simply expressing the heart of the subject matter-- that maudlin-and-joyful-in-equal-measures nature of youth stepping into the world with open minds and open hearts. The journey is everything. The cinematography is gorgeous. The Ross brothers show us the beauty of the land, with striking scene after striking scene, the beauty of the kids, and the beauty of the people the kids meet along the road. This film touched a deep place in my own heart, connecting me with the time when I was also young and felt that upwelling joy of the road stretching out ahead; that sense of jumping blind into a wide-open world where anything could happen. I absolutely loved this film!
