Critics Consensus

Intelligent and scientifically provocative, Gattaca is an absorbing sci fi drama that poses important interesting ethical questions about the nature of science.

Stylishly scoped with ice-blue hues and smartly visualized with a forbiddingly cold design, Gattaca is an intelligently-conceived sci-fi chiller starring Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman.

An institutional hush envelops the compelling cautionary fable Gattaca as if it were muffled by a velvet lab coat.

A thoughtful hybrid of sci-fi, thriller, and character drama; to give you some idea of its high-mindedness, it not only opens with a relevant Bible verse (Ecclesiastes 7:13), but in the opening credits that follow, Gore Vidal is fifth-billed.

The screenplay is tightly written with a fascinating premise that explores society’s overemphasis on genetic manipulation as a panacea for woes they’ve invented for themselves.

It’s a cool-heeled but gripping musing on whether we should, just because we could, that also finds room for freaking Gore Vidal.

Feels like a school play with slightly better sets. By turns dreary, melodramatic and impossibly conceited, it's hard to see what anyone likes about this. The score is dreadful too. Jude Law adds a little bit of life but it's mostly a nonsensical, bloodless slog.

Brutally ahead of its time, Gattaca pulls the curtain back on a future that is very much already here. What was made as science fiction could now almost be considered commentary, and the strength of the filmmaking helps drive home that realization. The sets create a world that feels futuristic, but not by much, keeping the viewer grounded in the reality of what may come. They also make it harder to emotionally distance oneself from what is fast becoming a reality. A final tip-of-the-hat moment arrives in the closing minutes to balance what had seemed like such an unattainable goal. Vincent has more in common with those around him, and is less of an outcast, than even he realizes. Gattaca is well cast, and no role feels out of place. Aside from the sporadic request to suspend disbelief and simply accept a few details as “because the future,” the film maintains a driving suspense all the way through the credits.
