When much-feared hermit Felix Bush (Robert Duvall) comes to town with a wad of cash and announces his intention to preside over his own funeral, fast-talking mortician Frank Quinn (Bill Murray) smells a big payday in the air. Frank sends his young apprentice, Buddy, to charm Felix and win Felix's business. As the day of the unusual event approaches, Buddy uncovers a long-held secret involving the hermit, a local widow (Sissy Spacek) and an Illinois preacher.

Duvall, Murray, Black, Spacek, McRaney, Cobb...all excellent in their telling of this unique story. See more Mike S @RT41902413 Aug 5 As everyone points out, this film has a superb cast. And the basic Faulkneresque idea that serves as a framework for the story is original and potentially rich with humor, drama and some very moving scenes. But the film has problems with pacing, character development, and dialog. And the story loses it's way in the 2nd half of the film and starts meandering. Bill Murray did a comendable job playing a character that doesn't quite know who he's supposed to be, a cynical, comic hustler or someone desperately in need of a little success. Ditto Bill Cobbs who does the best one could hope for playing a character who's so poorly thought out he ends up being superfluous to the story. I was left wondering if there were scenes relegated to the cutting room floor that could've helped helped flesh out the story and the characters. I thought it was interesting how different people, locals in the nearby community, reacted to the hermit, Felix Bush and what we learn about him. This film has a great cast, including Robert Duvall, Sissy Spacek and Bill Murray. I'd say its a somewhat thought provoking film and one I'd happily recommend, yes.
