Emerging from Ann Arbor, Mich., amidst a countercultural revolution, The Stooges' powerful and aggressive style of rock 'n' roll blew a crater in the musical landscape of the late 1960s. Assaulting audiences with a blend of rock, blues, R&B, and free jazz, the band planted the seeds for what would be called punk and alternative rock in the decades that followed. Iggy is the star of the show. He comes across, still lean and long-haired and handsome (and almost fully clothed), as intelligent, caring -- and still vexed by what he sees as the corporate corruption of rock 'n' roll in the 70s.

It's a letdown that a singular director like Jarmusch has produced such a conventional film. In its totality, though, it's still better than most movies of its kind because he never forgets to foreground the unique individuality of his subjects...

Fantastic doco on one of music's most seminal bands. Jarmusch lets the music and Iggy's fine ability to tell a story do all the work too great effect.

Such a cool and weird Michigan vibe in this -- I grew up in the same area just after these times and so some of the stories are very familiar. Highly recommended!

A Stooges doc is quite overdue, and uber-fan Jim Jarmusch took it on…better late than never. Iggy is such a cool dude and it's always enjoyable to see interviews with him. I have two questions…why did they interview him in a laundry room? Why did they interview James Williamson in what looked like the bathroom of a medical facility? This was definitely a doc for the fans, and it skipped over a couple of chunks of time, which made for some confusion, but I guess they had to reign it in somehow to make it not 6 hours long, and the answer was skipping over the majority of Iggy's solo career…it's a Stooges doc, not an Iggy one, right? I had to look up how the Asheton brothers died, and it feels like those details are part of a band's story..or did I miss it? There was some great old footage of the band, which is always nice to see, but also unnecessary random stock footage that I didn't need to see. Personal nitpicking aside, I thought it was fun to watch and captured the spirit of the band and Iggy, and watching Mike Watt play with them and the smile on his face was so joyous. Overall, this was fun to watch, and there are absolutely interesting stories told. It's shame that the Asheton brothers aren't still around, but it's VERY nice that they lived long enough to reunite.

Great early clips and footage, and made you understand why the stooges were so special. It did skip and entire 15 years to get two kids come back.
