Critics Consensus

Sexual awakening stories aren't in short supply, but Good Luck to You, Leo Grande proves you can still tell one with a refreshing -- and very funny -- spin.

More than a mere philosophical exercise, Good Luck to You, Leo Grande is sweet, sexy, and certainly the new favorite film of Father Intintola from The Sopranos.

You could call Brand’s script an exercise in delayed gratification except that it elevates the delay itself into an entertaining and perceptive exploration of eroticism and its many subtleties.

Not only does “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande” paint a deft picture of the performance of sex, but it rather artfully displays the pleasures – and dangers – that come when that performance is stripped away.

In the end, Leo Grande isn’t a film only about sex but also about liberation and emotional intimacy, with oneself and with others.

Good Luck To You, Leo Grande is a delight and likely one of the best comedies we’re going to see in 2022.

An excellent and courageous performance by Emma Thompson makes this a worthwhile film to watch. Daryl McCormick makes an impression as the young male sex worker who is hired by the retired religious education teacher who regrets sacrificing her youth and adventures she never experienced.

An exquisite film about an elderly, curious widow who hires a young male sex worker to rediscover the meaning of sexual pleasure. Despite a clear effort to stretch out the dialogue to prolong the anticipation of the acts, this ultimately serves to enrich the characters and their dilemmas, fostering empathy for their doubts and hesitations. Excellent performances and an incredibly intimate, committed portrayal by Emma Thompson.

Great chemistry between the two main characters along with realistic dialogue, never overplayed, made this an absorbing film for me. It shows that huge budgets aren't always necessary and honest human interaction can be a winner. 👏

It had a feeling of a play with great intimate performances.

Pleasant enough and anything with Emma Thompson is worth watching, but it's fairly formulaic and has no great insights, with all the story twists and turns (such as they are) as predictable as old age
