Radio funny man Adrian Cronauer (Robin Williams) is sent to Vietnam to bring a little comedy back into the lives of the soldiers. After setting up shop, Cronauer delights the G.I.s but shocks his superior officer, Sergeant Major Dickerson (J.T. Walsh), with his irreverent take on the war. While Dickerson attempts to censor Cronauer's broadcasts, Cronauer pursues a relationship with a Vietnamese girl named Trinh (Chintara Sukapatana), who shows him the horrors of war first-hand.

Offering only hackneyed insights into the war, the film makes for stodgy drama. But Williams' manic monologues behind the mike are worth anybody's money.

Make no mistake about it: Mr. Williams's performance, though it's full of uproarious comedy, is the work of an accomplished actor. ''Good Morning, Vietnam'' is one man's tour de force.

This is a deceptively simple film. The comedic antics pull their audience into the work, but its treatment of the setting is remarkable and – I think – a lot braver than many of us released at the time.

Robin Williams gives a commendable and energetic performance, and the film has plenty of memorable comedic moments. However, some of the jokes and humor feel dated today, which takes away from the overall experience. It’s a solid film, but not one I’d feel the need to watch again.

It had some really funny parts and Robin Williams was obviously the best. I mean, it must have been really really hard to perfect those long comedic rants over the microphone.

Good Morning, Vietnam is a comedy about a man with a microphone and an institution that has made the mistake of giving him one. Robin Williams comes in talking, and he doesn’t stop. The jokes fly. The brass gets nervous. The troops get a reason to laugh. But underneath the comedy is something darker: war is still war. The movie knows that laughter can be a weapon. And Robin Williams knows how to fire it.

It's a classic from the era of ever present Vietnam War movies. It delivers a cultural history lesson for anyone wanting to learn. Plus, it's entertaining. This is one of a small handful of must-see American war movies for anyone wanting to understand the America of yesterday. It finds humor in the darkest moments and reflects the attitude of a country struggling to understand what it had become and what is was becoming.
