Funny and poignant, well-drawn characters, interesting themes about love and loss and living with a deeply neurotic mind. It doesn't matter if it's comedy or drama... Ben Stiller always goes deep and finds the truth inside the characters he inhabits. Jennifer Jason Leigh, Greta Gerwig, and Rhys Ifans were all fantastic. You'll never go wrong with the brilliant writing of Noah Baumbach. Highly recommend! See more Mason M Jul 8 You already know I love a good Noah Baumbach picture. And Greenberg was an enjoyable and charming film that definitely does not disappoint in his filmography. Baumbach is on of few directors that I really trust to tackle the mundane. His dialogue in this is perfectly realistic yet still smart enough to still be very enjoyable and riveting to hear, and the writing all around in this film is stellar. Greenberg and Florence both were some of the most interesting and best written characters in Baumbach's filmography. Ben Stiller gives a great performance as the titular Greenberg, but the real highlight performance of this film was the newcomer Greta Gerwig. Her performance was phenomenal. She totally nails the pushover nature of the character, yet also exudes enough charm to get the right reaction from the audience, while staying a very plausible person you feel like you could know. This also was a very Baumbach film in all the best ways, from the characters to the cinematography to the music, it showed off all the strengths of his style. Is this suppose to be how millennials interact? There is ZERO chemistry between the leads- but is there NOT suppose to be? I'm 55 so I Gen X but would think that human interaction hasn't changed a whole lot. Maybe I'm wrong? Both of these people almost never laugh/ almost never say anything funny/ and almost never show any kind of animation. Do millennials not have passion for anything? These 2 didn't. She's talented and confident enough to sing on a stage- yet seems not excited, not nervous, not anything. I couldn't tell if they acted the lines this way on purpose or if they just did a bad job at conveying the parts. The movie isn't good at all and seeing their mediocre enthusiasm for how and what they do with their lives= was how I felt watching this. If this is how people after my gen communicate and live- where's the LIFE? I won't be keeping it in my collection and didn't enjoy watching it and didn't understand AT ALL what the point is in making a film whose lead characters are boring and unaffected. By EVERYTHING.
