Gym Rat follows Lonnie Milsap, a fitness obsessed ex-con freshly released from prison and chasing a delusional dream of becoming the next Mr. Olympia. Struggling to rebuild his life, he takes a job selling steroids for a volatile gym owner and spirals deeper into a cycle of drugs, violence, and self destruction. Throughout it all, Lonnie is haunted by his lifelong idol, Lou Ferrigno, the international bodybuilding champion turned pop culture icon whose larger than life physique and screen presence made him a household name. Ferrigno's legacy shaped Lonnie's identity from childhood, and that fixation has never let go. Ferrigno appears throughout the film as both himself and as a projection of the man Lonnie desperately believes he can become, the unstoppable, transformed version of himself he's been chasing his entire life. A budding romance offers a ray of hope, but Lonnie's obsession with winning and clashes with his bigoted bully of a boss threaten to derail everything, and we're left to wonder if he'll take that hard look in the mirror before it's too late.

Wow, captivating from start to finish. It was pretty moving to know that the fitness industry has a side that most people don't discuss. Great seeing this brought to the main screen. See more Thomas O @DrOConnor-Trusted Oct 25, 2026 Gym Rat has come right on time. With an absolute massive epidemic of Anabolic-Androgenic Steroid AAS/Image and performance Enhancing Drug IPEDS use exploding with tens of millions of people, all over the world- this meaningful media transcends cinema, social-cultural trends/social media’s grips and a public health tsunami that’s already been unleashed on teenagers, 20-40 somethings and even Baby Boomers! It seems like our traditional medical community is either looking the other way or is just completely astonished at what’s happening. As a physician who has dedicated his life/career to the understanding, protection and promotion of harm-reduction principles for those that have decided to use AAS/IPEDS, I’m so happy that Josh Murray- Actor and Director of Gym Rat reached out to me years ago and asked me to be part of this unique project. I was asked to do the epilogue for Gym Rat. After watching Gym Rat, you may start to understand why so many people are using AAS/IPEDS. Dr O See more Read all reviews
