It's not a picture for cynics, requiring some relaxation while Softley explores old tech and cartoon personalities, but it's a vibrant feature that's superbly executed, making for an entertaining sit for those willing to go along with it.

HACKERS fully commits to what is perhaps the definitive stylized embrace of the subculture, likely helping to create what it's ostensibly depicting. Wired together by a pulpy thriller plot, the film is good fun, and holds up well as a snapshot of the era. And with our tech hopes and fears now so different, it's apparent that the film is actually more about youth than it is about the internet, which is why its appeal is enduring, if also pretty cheesy at times.
