The true story of Pfc. Desmond T. Doss (Andrew Garfield), who won the Congressional Medal of Honor despite refusing to bear arms during WWII on religious grounds. Doss was drafted and ostracized by fellow soldiers for his pacifist stance but went on to earn respect and adoration for his bravery, selflessness and compassion after he risked his life -- without firing a shot -- to save 75 men in the Battle of Okinawa.

Critics Consensus

Hacksaw Ridge uses a real-life pacifist's legacy to lay the groundwork for a gripping wartime tribute to faith, valor, and the courage of remaining true to one's convictions.

Gibson's robust directorial technique brings an undeniable punch to the combat scenes ... Elsewhere in the film, however, there's a sledgehammer lack of subtlety that is only partially mitigated by Andrew Garfield's impressive performance.

A rousing tale of Pacific War heroism that has more in common with jingoistic Wayne staples such as Sands of Iwo Jima or The Green Berets than anything in the 21st century, this is wearily formulaic film-making.

The trouble is this proper hero worship is drawn out and overstated in a bloated film that could lose 20 minutes of first-act exposition and 15 minutes of battle scene redundancies from its 131 minutes.

For a film about a conscientious objector, this film may be viewed as unjustifiably violent, but Gibson still presents his hero in the best possible light, and the love story electrifies the screen.

The superbly shot battle scenes aside, Gibson’s traditionalist sensibilities show up in how he shoots everything else which is a perfect fit for this particular film. It’s easy to get lost in the period he visualizes.

Honeslty, this is one of my favorite movies. Andrew Garfield does an excellent job of showcasing his very fine acting skills. The plot is unreal and the adversity throughout this movie makes it worth watching again and again.
