Critics Consensus

Though the screenplay and the novel it's based on were both written by the same person, critics say Hanging Up is an unsuccessful adaptation. The acting is praised as solid, but is ultimately unable to save the film.

A real shame that this isn't a good movie. Go to Full Review

Three of Hollywood's most beautiful and talented actresses, Ryan, Keaton, and Kudrow, are totally wasted in this shamelessly sappy meller that bears the schmaltzy sensibility of Nora Ephorn, its inept producer and co-scripter even though Keaton is helmer Go to Full Review

Robert P @Superbad 8 hrs ago Hanging Up is a 1.5 star Movie so why are people giving this a *5* star rating??? See more
Farah R @Farah Oct 25, 2026 Despite the effort put into this drama, I found it dull and uninteresting. The characters weren’t compelling, and their mundane lives made for an unengaging story that didn’t feel worth telling. See more
Ava J @Avaiya Oct 7, 2026 I liked how the character development was a bit messy, it made it seem real especially from Meg Ryan’s pov. As someone who has a surprisingly veryyyy similar life, the portrayal struck a chord and a day recorded in the life would be similar - filled with emotions that are all over the place. Although I do admit that the ending scene was a bit trite with the whole grown as* ladies throwing flour I mean cmon See more
cathy C @RT78229684 Oct 2, 2026 Waste of talent sadly… overacted, no depth. Had expected more with such a cast. Had to stop watching half way through the film. See more
Grace M @Monikamisiu Feb 28, 2026 Odd movie. Did not enjoy See more
Daniel G @DanielGodoyBsb Feb 10, 2023 Though treated tactfully, the impending death of a father and the memories it engenders didn't really require all the star power of this movie (Meg Ryan, Diane Keaton - who directed, Lisa Kudrow and Walter Mathau). On the other hand, this movie didn't age too badly - 23 years later it's at least still pleasant and brought a few laughs. See more
