See more Albert B @Albert365 Mar 4 Hidden Figures sells itself as a "true story," but the film constantly rewrites history to manufacture drama. The movie is set around the 1961 Mercury missions yet portrays NASA as heavily segregated with colored bathrooms, coffee pots, and a segregated "colored computers" group. In reality, the West Area Computing Unit was dissolved in 1958 when NACA became NASA and segregation policies were abolished. Dorothy Vaughan was already a supervisor in 1949, not fighting for the position in the 1960s as the film claims. Mary Jackson didn’t win a dramatic courtroom battle to attend engineering classes; she was granted permission by the city of Hampton. Even Katherine Johnson said the famous bathroom scene never happened. The film turns a complex team effort into a simplistic narrative that sacrifices historical accuracy for inspirational moments.
