When a pair of petty criminals attempt to rob his small-town diner, Tom Stall (Viggo Mortensen) quickly and easily kills them both. In the flush of news coverage of Tom's seemingly heroic actions, a threatening stranger named Carl Fogarty (Ed Harris) comes to town, fingering the unassuming family man as long-missing Philadelphia mobster Joey Cusack. To the horror of his wife, Edie (Maria Bello), and teenage son, Jack (Ashton Holmes), Tom finds he must confront his violent past.

A History of Violence may not be that complicated a tale, but with a marvelous, Oscar-nominated screenplay by Josh Olson and an incredible ensemble, it becomes a riveting experience that utilizes its story elements to deliver a compelling narrative.

I really liked this movie. Enough to give it five stars. It was very short, especially for it's subject matter. I'm glad it wasn't hard to understand. Pair this one with Eastern Promises for a Mortensen Cronenberg double feature.

It was a great watch, I would most definitely NOT watch it again Not saying it was terrible just not all those kind of movies you can watch again. Some scenes were unnecessary which made the whole movie feel long even though its just an hour and 35 minutes. Overall good movie

Viggo walks a thin line with a tough character but I feel like he pulled it off. Joey is gnarly. Bello is smoking. Harris is a nice touch.

Tension-filled thrills combined with heartfelt familial drama, A History of Violence loses itself a bit when it comes to the handling of a certain storyline, but this is overall a well-paced and tonally on-point picture from Cronenberg that is superbly written and excellently acted.
