Kevin L @Lakeman 1 day ago Fascinating, but confounding as well. You have to let this one roll over you, taking what seems to be reality as you ease into it, from opening scene to an abrupt shift in tone and the reality of the movie up to that point. There's what is and what may be, and then there's all the shifting elements of time, settings, and emotions. Emotions and thoughts range from sadness to frustration to moments of happiness and guilt. Vicky Krieps again shows why she is in such rarefied air among today's actors. She conveys aspects of actresses from several decades past but has all the elements of modern acting that brim w/ realism & authenticity in every role she plays. She is subtlety in acting exemplified, yet is such an earthy, grounded presence. Yes, there are scenes that were really odd choices I can't find good reason for. But we may be dealing w/ a collapsing, fragmented mind and the fragility of memory here. Still, a wondrous work by the great Mathieu Amalric. 3.7 stars See more Daniela T @RT94217956 Jan 19, 2024 This is difficult to watch but ultimately very rewarding. A story that can only really be told as a film, which is sufficient reason to see it without the rest. See more Justin T @RT20830295 Jan 5, 2023 The exquisite Vicky Krieps plays a woman who decides, out of the blue, to abandon her husband and kids in the gorgeous and elegiac "Hold Me Tight," directed by Mathieu Amalric. Told in a series of fragmented memories, the film creates a mosaic-like portrait of a doomed marriage, drawn from a collection of seemingly disparate images that only coalesce in the final moments. Like flipping through a photo album of polaroids, we catch glimpses of a happy home interspersed with occasional moments of genuine misery and rage. Throughout, Krieps brings a staggering level of emotional rawness to the role, breaking our hearts again and again as she tries to make sense of her unthinkable decision to leave behind everything she seemingly loves. There is a mystery underneath it all, which the film delicately reveals as it pulls back the layers of the onion to show us where it all went wrong for Krieps' mournful and defiant Clarisse. The rest of the cast is magnificent, especially the staggeringly handsome Arieh Worthalter as Clarisse's deeply confused husband who must somehow manage to go on. Brilliant and unmissable. I had to ask someone else as I was leaving who had researched the film before going to the theatre what it was about as I was left guessing. See more Read all reviews
