Twenty-thousand years ago, Earth was a wondrous, prehistoric world filled with great danger, not the least of which is the beginning of the Ice Age. To avoid a terrible frostbite, the planet's majestic creatures - and a few small, slothful ones - begin migrating south. The story revolves around sub-zero heroes: a woolly mammoth, a saber-toothed tiger, a sloth and a prehistoric combination of a squirrel and rat, known as Scrat.

Critics Consensus

Even though Ice Age is treading over the same grounds as Monsters, Inc. and Shrek, it has enough wit and laughs to stand on its own.

In the time-honored tradition of kids' films, Ice Age mixes broad displays of physical cruelty with a sweet message, which in this case is about the need of each member of a herd to look after the other.

There's enough classically derived Road Runner-type fun to keep most family audiences happy. But the characters betray their contrivance.

After the first three wordless minutes of Ice Age, where a mute squirrel creature named Scrat hilariously struggles to bury his sole remaining acorn in a newly formed glacier, everything goes downhill.

The highlight of the film turns out to be the character least integral to the "plot" ... [Scrat's] apparently eternal quest for a beloved chestnut...plays like a series of classic cartoon short subjects...

Ice Age is a surprisingly enjoyable animated film. Blue Sky Studios brings its characters together in a memorable way. The first movie introduces Manny and Sid, with Sid delivering unpredictable humor that keeps the story lively. It also lays the groundwork for a franchise without feeling like a setup for sequels. The film builds a fun world around an unlikely group. Humor, adventure, and emotion fit together naturally, and the screenplay avoids getting lost in childish nonsense. Manny’s guarded personality balances Sid’s ridiculous behavior, giving the story heart as well as laughs. It is a creative take on animation, with characters who feel like more than punchlines. Overall, Ice Age is a well-crafted cartoon that turns a simple premise into something substantial. The comedy gives it lasting appeal, while the friendship at its center adds warmth. I really enjoyed this film, and it is easy to see why these characters became the foundation for a successful franchise.

Hilariously stupid! It is such a dumb but funny movie that is ABSOLUTELY worth watching. It is most definitely meant for younger children and I have loved it ever since I was little. Completely recommend ❄️🧊🦣🐅🦥

This is one of those franchises where the first one is easily the best! It's still as "cool" as ever with its laughs, cool cartoony designs, and most of all, heart.
