What to Know

Critics Consensus

Aiming high in ambition but scoring low in execution, In the Blink of an Eye is a sprawling meditation on the human condition that turns up few compelling revelations.

Director Andrew Stanton weaves together three different stories across three different eras of human history. The result is a streaming epic as painfully sappy as it is structurally ambitious. Go to Full Review

Stanton’s long-delayed film is looking to capture the fragile wonder of life, but it can be po-faced, lacking detail and occasionally daft. Go to Full Review

“In the Blink of an Eye” proves yet again that Stanton is a dreamer, with an unshakeable faith in humanity. That’s not nothing. Go to Full Review

The links between the three stories are fairly groan-inducing, and the attempt at an uplifting message is barely worthy of the kind of silent nod you give someone who lets you into traffic. Go to Full Review

What tries to be a live-action version of Godfrey Reggio’s Koyaanisqatsi, Powaqqatsi and Naqoyqatsi [...] ultimately ends up being a complete nothingburger that has nothing of interest to say, thematically, narratively, and aesthetically. Go to Full Review

Where there should be profundity, there’s a curious emptiness that suggests none of this was fully thought through before going to camera. Go to Full Review

Valerie L @RT42841281 6h I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. It reiterates how our past is connected to our future, and all of us make a difference no matter how large or small. Two thumbs up! See more Sudipta T @RT33249143 1d A deeply divisive film, but one that worked for me. Blink of an Eye trades conventional storytelling for a more abstract, emotional experience. It explores human connection and the meaning of life in a subtle, non-linear way that won’t resonate with everyone, but if you’re open to interpretation, it can be surprisingly powerful. At times, it feels less like the film failed the critics, and more like the critics failed to fully engage with what the film was trying to do. See more Rainy P @RT32832828 1d I enjoyed this film quite a bit. Much of what the main characters of each story encountered was sad/hard, but their triumphs made it all worth it in the end. I think the older you are the more this movie probably resonates with you as you've lived more of your life and have faced the hardships life brings, but you also, hopefully, have found the good that all of the hard work and pain has brought you to. I imagine those that are leaving bad reviews are younger on average and may not have had children or significant others as of yet, but if they were to revisit this film in 10, 20, 30 years they just might submit an entirely different review. See more Jennie B. @fatbearsummer 1d While the character development is lacking, still a hopefull message on the interconnectedness amd preservation of humamity. See more jamie L @RT97862983 3d Slow and boring. I wasted quite a bit of time trudging through this one. Very woke with its all-inclusive message. I'm kind of tired of Hollywood telling us what we should think See more Terry T @RT00307920 3d I think this is one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. It's uplifting and gives hope. I find it unbelievable that the professional critics will tear this down. The acting is great in the filming is fantastic. In a period of so much evil and hate this was a pleasure.
