Critics Consensus

It Comes at Night makes lethally effective use of its bare-bones trappings while proving once again that what's left unseen can be just as horrifying as anything on the screen.

It Comes at Night is a powerful, slow-burning horror, a distressing and nihilistic examination of human nature that lingers in the mind long after the shocking denouement.

The movie has its flaws. But one of Shults's main triumphs is to get us to believe in the danger of the outside world as fiercely as his characters do.

Shults's adoption of a more vicious mode sharpens his already discomfiting take on families in states of extreme duress in his debut feature Krisha.

Writer/director Trey Edward Shults builds so much tension with such vague storytelling, and I loved every bit of the ambiguity and metaphorical message it provides.

Nothing really happens, it's slow, it stays slow and "it" never came at night...

I’m still waiting for “It” to come at night. I am very confused why this movie is so hyped up, I don’t really feel like anything happened. I WAS on the edge of my seat the entire movie, but I was really just waiting for anything interesting to happen.

I enjoyed the horror. Maybe a little slow at first but I got more into it as it went along. You might need to turn on your brain (at least a little) to enjoy this one. 3.5 stars.
