Critics Consensus

It Comes at Night makes lethally effective use of its bare-bones trappings while proving once again that what's left unseen can be just as horrifying as anything on the screen.

It Comes at Night is a powerful, slow-burning horror, a distressing and nihilistic examination of human nature that lingers in the mind long after the shocking denouement. Go to Full Review

The movie has its flaws. But one of Shults's main triumphs is to get us to believe in the danger of the outside world as fiercely as his characters do. Go to Full Review

Shults's adoption of a more vicious mode sharpens his already discomfiting take on families in states of extreme duress in his debut feature Krisha. Go to Full Review

Writer/director Trey Edward Shults builds so much tension with such vague storytelling, and I loved every bit of the ambiguity and metaphorical message it provides. Go to Full Review

Jack F @MovieFan111 6d Do not pay attention to the bad audience score on this one. Because I read all the negative reviews, I went into this movie thinking I was gonna hate it. It turned out to be the opposite for me. This is one of the most unique apocalypse movies I've seen because it doesn't focus on the disease/apocalypse itself, rather the people just trying to survive. There is almost no context to what happened in the outside world, and you have to use your imagination as to what could be out there and what is at stake. Some kind of disease most likely. Great acting. But it's generally not a good sign when a movie scores much higher in one category than another. That imbalance is typically for a reason, but at the end of the day, it's what YOU the watcher thinks. I'm extremely satisfied about watching this one, and goes to show not all stories need to have a happy ending. You've been watching too many Disney movies. It's time to grow up. See more john W. @RT79914396 May 1 Slow burn with a great cast and a gut punch of a finale. Love this movie See more Tyson D. @Spudsprout Apr 15 (Overall Rating: 3.96/5) (Very Good) --- (Cinematography/Atmosphere: 4/5) A film that tries to remain claustrophobic, even when outdoors, and it does it well. The evil is always just out of sight even when it's right in front of you. --- (Storyline/Plot: 3.75/5) I get keeping things vague but the characters have to know something to seclude themselves like they did. I feel like even a little info could have gone a long way. --- (Acting: 4.25/5) Solid acting makes the characters feel real and believable. --- (Character Quality: 4/5) This is exactly how I could see real people behaving in an event like this, suspicious hope. --- (Entertainment Value: 4/5) The tension ratchets up from the start and never really let's you breath and when it does, it does so falsely. --- (Expectations vs. Reality: 3.75/5) Ok, the title is very metaphorical, that with the trailer paint a very different picture of what this movie is truly about. Great film, poor marketing. See more Blake G. @blakeygef Apr 13 This was the most mid anticlimactic “suspenseful movie” I’ve seen. Don’t even waste your time on this. Ending was flopppp See more Gabriel S @Sanarel Apr 6 It Comes at Night is a restrained but effective apocalyptic thriller that proves a simple premise can be powerful. The story follows a family hiding in the woods during a deadly outbreak, whose fragile routine is disrupted when a stranger asks for help. What follows is a series of moral decisions and consequences that slowly unravel their sense of safety. While the plot is familiar and sometimes predictable, the film’s strength lies in its atmosphere and emotional focus, especially through Travis, whose fear and pain anchor the story. The tension builds gradually toward an expected yet impactful climax. Light on traditional horror and action, the film works best as a psychological thriller and drama, despite some thin world-building.
