It's the future -- 1973 -- and a rescue team is sent to fetch Col. Edward Carruthers (Marshall Thompson), the lone survivor of the first manned flight to Mars. Though he's slated for the firing squad after ostensibly murdering his entire crew, he insists that a Martian monster is to blame for the deaths. Cmdr. Van Heusen (Kim Spalding) and the team doubt Carruthers' claims, until more mysterious killings occur. To their horror, they realize the bloodthirsty beast is on board the ship with them.

I have to hand it to Cahn and Bixby: this is an incredibly cheaply made film with a laughable premise and yet it’s entertaining to watch if you take it in the right spirit. Go to Full Review

A tad slow, despite being only 69 minutes long, but undeniably fun. Go to Full Review

As with Alien and Jaws, for example, the most frightening things about this creature are the things that we don't see. Go to Full Review

It's a wonderful little horror thriller that will whet the appetites of fans that love claustrophobic genre pictures. Go to Full Review

Unintentionally funny low-budget 'Fifties horror effort. ("Mars is almost as big as Texas," one character thoughtfully muses at a point. "Maybe it's got monsters.") Go to Full Review

Anthony F @Anthony999 Sep 10, 2026 Low budget forerunner to ALIEN, this is a short, fast paced, simple blast of 50’s sci-fi. Hardcore genre fan as may add a stat. See more
Allan C @RT15713161 Aug 9, 2026 ALIEN’s campy space-horror ancestor It! The Terror from Beyond Space (1958) *** An iconic campy sci-fi thriller that clearly inspired Ridley Scott’s ALIEN, this tight little film follows a spaceship crew terrorized by a martian creature that has hitched a ride home from Mars. It’s surprisingly suspenseful for its low budget, though the limited acting keeps it from being a true classic; still, at just over an hour, it’s an entertaining and smarter-than-average piece of sci-fi. Edward H @TinTan Jan 17, 2026 I saw this when it opened in 1958, when I was 10. Three stars and one extra because it was considered one of the better monster movies and the inspiration for others like it to come. I found amusing that in one scene the men are seated at a table and the two women on the ship clear their dishes and serve them coffee! Speaking of furniture, perhaps the greatest threat to the crew is all the unsecured chairs and supplies would go flying around in an antigravity situation. Ah, the '50s... If it wasn't giant atomic insects, then it was men in rubber monster suits. However, there were first class features that have stood the test of time, like The War of the Worlds (1953) and my favorite, Forbidden Planet (1956) a standout for its script, ground breaking special effects and set design, that definitely influenced Star Wars, etc. See more
