Atmospheric and spare, the filmmaking matches the tone of the subject, justice obscured by misplaced duty to legacy and shared goals. See more matthias s @Thescreenasvor Jul 27 **Julie Zwijgt – ★★★☆☆** When Belgium picked *Julie Zwijgt* for the Oscars over some arguably stronger contenders, I expected a gut-wrenching, all-consuming drama about abuse — the kind that leaves you hollow. Tessa Van den Broeck *delivers* as Julie, easily the emotional anchor of the film, but she’s basically carrying this on her own. There’s a lot of long, quiet shots of her working out, and while I get the "less is more" approach, for me it was more like “less is not enough.” I wanted to feel disgusted, broken — and I just didn’t. It’s hauntingly real, and the atmosphere + soundtrack are excellent, but it never fully sinks its claws in. I needed *more*, or rather, *less subtlety*. No names, no details, no real climax. A powerful short film is hidden somewhere in here, but as a full-length feature, it left me too detached to be devastated. See more Sophie W Apr 28 Incredible film; it builds slowly until you are completely committed to the characters and you’re hanging in their every word and expression. Truly one of a kind, I’ve never seen anything like it. Sets the bar for how to write and direct characters that really feel real.
