Critics Consensus

Like countless sequels, The Karate Kid Part II tries upping the stakes without straying too far from formula -- and suffers diminishing returns as a result.

Karate Kid II is true to the formula of the first film, and handsomely shot in Hawaii, it presents traditional Japanese notions of family loyalty and honor most attractively.

Unfortunately, however, the film is just another sequel.

What's most surprising -- and most awkward -- about Kid II is how peripheral the Kid is to the narrative, and how difficult his place in it is to justify.

Pat Morita shines in an expanded role as the legendary Mr. Miyagi, but The Karate Kid Part II doesn't hold a candle to its iconic predecessor.

The characters have grown and developed since the first film. The story line involves more variables, including a deeper degree of jeopardy for Daniel and Miyagi.

It’s as if the movie had turned into the most primitive kind of Western.

Maybe controversial to think this is better than the first. Even though the drum move finish is laughable compared to the swan kick, I found this more in touch with its characters and themes.

Although the first one was better the second one is still a classic! The first expansion of the Miyagi-verse hits home in this sequel.

The Karate Kid Part II is not as good as the first, but that doesn't mean it isn't worth a watch. I love the scenery of this movie and Mr. Miyagi and Daniel LaRusso continue to be unmatched when it comes to on screen chemistry.

The first one is better, but this was a good continuation of the original. There's new themes, Mr. Miyagi's backstory, and even character development in the villain.
