An attempt to blend the war epic and the caper film that doesn't quite come off. Go to Full Review David Parkinson Empire Magazine Nov 19, 2013

The action is flashy and intermittent, deliberately wallowing in a mire of revisionist grot, churned up vistas of European mud. Time has made it more intuitive and caustic a film, than its daft reputation might suggest. Go to Full Review Geoff Andrew Time Out Feb 9, 2006
Interesting only in so far as it reveals Eastwood's nonchalant attitude to the blockbuster. Go to Full Review Eddie Harrison film-authority.com Jun 20, 2024

…slapdash, funny and deeply irreverent war-comedy…Donald Sutherland’s pot-smoking tank commander Oddball steals the show as the kind of spaced-out, psychedelic counter-culture character that absolutely didn’t exist in WWII... Go to Full Review Leigh Paatsch Herald Sun (Australia) May 12, 2020

The usually unemotive Eastwood is more engaged than usual, clearly having a whale of a time with a fruity support cast. Go to Full Review Richard R. Harmetz Los Angeles Free Press Jan 14, 2020
Even with Eastwood in the title role, this poorly scripted film would surely have fallen apart under the weight of its own heavy handedness were it not for the presence of Donald Sutherland. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

Bill B @RT01438538 Oct 15, 2026 Big production action venture, explosions everywhere, but a little too long for my taste. This was probably great watching at the theater in 1970.
