Critics Consensus

Kill the Irishman may not add much in the way of new ingredients to its crowded genre, but the admirable efforts of a solidly assembled cast add extra depth to a familiar story.

Certainly the filmmakers rounded up the right cast of tough-guy actors for this story of mob activity, but their presence doesn't lend much vigor to this unfocused and sentimental tale. Go to Full Review Bill Goodykoontz Arizona Republic Apr 7, 2011

The cast makes up for some occasionally spotty storytelling and telegraphing of events that keep "Irishman" from being as good as it could have been. Go to Full Review Mick LaSalle San Francisco Chronicle Mar 24, 2011

What makes this film special and memorable is the character of Danny Green, who is not the usual neighborhood hoodlum you see in movies, the kind who gets in deep and gradually loses his soul. Go to Full Review Mike Massie Gone With The Twins Nov 30, 2020

The action, suspense, and tone of the movie are as flat as Stevenson's inflectionless dialogue. Go to Full Review Richard Propes TheIndependentCritic.com Sep 13, 2020

"Kill the Irishman" is like a history book, where this and that and this other thing all happen at the appropriate moments, but there is little in the way of character development or emotional connection. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

Demi D @redpoodle Oct 28, 2026 I'm a big fan of raw organized crime mafia movies. How did I miss this one, probably because the lead roles aren't Italians in New York. This movie was - Great with lots of gritty crime, incredible action, just a completely wild ride! A true story that is really well done about Danny Greene. I can't believe I don't even know this actor, he was so good. You have to see this one! See more James H @RT22708432 May 6, 2026 If there’s nothing else on TV, I guess OK, was surprised to see Val Kilmer at this age as one of the critics pointed out old tail, but good acting predictable tolerable like I said if there’s nothing else on TV See more John C @JshieldsC Nov 16, 2025 Maybe it’s because I’m from Northeastern Ohio that I have a sentimental liking of Kill the Irishman… But I don’t think so. It’s a story worth telling with a cast worth watching. Weaving in actual news footage added a lot of credibility and authenticity to the story. The cast made it real bringing back memories of the real Danny Greene. See more Frans B @FransB Sep 28, 2025 Brilliant! Absolute perfect cast for the job, and all of them excels in character. Jonathan Hensleigh did good in bringing this to screen. Great story, based on true events no less, well written and executed. Very good cinematography that creates the perfect ambiance of the era it represents. Lots of action, wheeling and dealing, intrigue, drama, twists and suspense. Very entertaining, highly recommended See more Stephen C @bob25009 Jul 12, 2025 Success in 1 hour and 46 minutes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Starring Val Kilmer as Joe Manditski!!!!!!!!!!!! The USA grossed over $1,200,000.00!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! See more Alain E @AlainE Jun 11, 2025 Watchable but far from great. Kind like a news broadcast. See more Read all reviews
