Critics Consensus

Part family drama, part sci-fi adventure, Kin struggles to balance its narrative until a late twist that suggests it all might have worked better as the first episode of a TV series.

Mostly works, despite some occasionally thudding B-movie dialogue.

If the Baker boys truly were fabulous, they'd have had the guts to go all the way and earn an R rating.

Even for the realm of YA sci-fi, the boy-befriends-a-gun storyline of Kin is pretty messed up.

The script is so utterly pointless and offers little to no probative value other than to set up a franchise without a care or a thought into the current movie they were making.

Kin is at its best when the Baker brothers engage in sharp and ruthless action, whereas the screenplay's attempt to imbue the material with gravitas fails to create the requisite substance.

KIN is an underwhelming film that struggles to engage. Despite James Franco and Zoë Kravitz in the cast, performances feel misjudged, and the young lead fails to carry the story, making it hard to invest in the narrative. The screenplay is chaotic, blending family drama, action, and sci-fi without focus, with the futuristic weapon feeling forced and absurd. Direction lacks cohesion, leaving scenes drifting with no clear tone or purpose, and moments meant to be suspenseful or exciting fall flat due to poor pacing. Visuals are competent but cannot save the weak story. Overall, KIN is frustrating and disappointing; its ambitious genre mix collapses under weak writing, miscast actors, and unfocused execution, making it hard to recommend to viewers seeking a compelling or entertaining experience.

I wish the critics could stop overanalyzing the film and just tell it like it is. Kin, is just a cool ass movie, and very entertaining, and so much fun

Film wasn't half bad, some random big actors turning up was a bit of a surprise and VFX was pretty good, worth a watch 👍

Kin is one of them hidden gems that I stumbled across purely by accident, it's entertaining from start to finish and is one of those films which you want to keep going, or at least want a second installment to see what becomes of the young lad. I would say that if you want to be entertained without having to concentrate on a twisting story line then kin is definitely worth looking at.

Unique scenario made for a really different movie, but the suspension of disbelief and open ended conclusion was disappointing, script needed work

Some convoluted plot tricks to move the story along and a weird twist at the end to create the set up for a sequel or series. Still, an entertaining enough way to pass an evening
