Ruthless Paul Kaufman (Dennis Hopper) rules and protects this microcosm but enforces painful class distinctions. Second-in-command Cholo DeMora (John Leguizamo) attempts to lead a secret rebellion against Kaufman's tyranny, but when the zombies begin to evolve, the survivors must discover a way to protect themselves from a zombie horde that can learn and adapt.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

George A. Romero's latest entry in his much-vaunted Dead series is not as fresh as his genre-inventing original, Night of the Living Dead. But Land of the Dead does deliver on the gore and zombies-feasting-on-flesh action.

There is indeed a lot of people-eating, with entrails spilling loosely, in Land of the Dead, but for those paying close attention, there is a good deal more going on. Go to Full Review Owen Gleiberman Entertainment Weekly Jun 29, 2005

Romero's fourth-grade dialogue doesn't help matters, but anyone seeking out the latest achievements in cranial ruptures, spewing-blood gouts, and ground-beef spillage need look no further. Go to Full Review Joshua Ryan FandomWire Oct 21, 2024

I may still prefer my zombies mindless, but I respect and appreciate the fresh take from a master of the genre. Go to Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Feb 12, 2022

Neither Romero's gory spectacle nor his larger-than-average budget distracts too much from Land of the Dead's thematic power, which still feels relevant Go to Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy Sep 19, 2021

It's good, gory fun, even if its satiric jabs at societal mores are more heavy-handed than in the past. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

B P @Bradster69 Sep 27, 2026 Not Bad, but Not My Favorite See more Fro T @frothizzlereviews Sep 18, 2026 Romero carnage at its gnarliest! (Maybe after Day of the Dead). Hands are getting split in half, intestines are being pulled out, and Big Daddy the Gas Station Attendant has a machine gun! Dennis Hooper chews the scenery as the villain Kaufman, and John Leguizamo kicks ass playing Cholo. As a big fan of Shaun of the Dead, the zombie cameos from Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright are a full circle moment. 9/10 See more Robert P @Superbad Sep 7, 2026 Land of the Dead = a *3* star movie! See more Abel T @abletable7 Jun 20, 2026 A good enough film that brings. Nothing new to the table See more Blayno @Blayno Jun 19, 2026 Honestly a lot of fun. Really loved seeing a zombie learning how humans work and how to use weapons. See more Daniel D @DanielDuVall Oct 17, 2025 This movie looks like it was released in 2005. It feels on par with other staples of the “zombie” sub genre, but can’t match the appeal of Romero’s previous outings with the undead. See more Read all reviews
