After 19 years as a prisoner, Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman) is freed by Javert (Russell Crowe), the officer in charge of the prison workforce. Valjean promptly breaks parole but later uses money from stolen silver to reinvent himself as a mayor and factory owner. Javert vows to bring Valjean back to prison. Critics Consensus

Impeccably mounted but occasionally bombastic, Les Misérables largely succeeds thanks to bravura performances from its distinguished cast.

It's just so soaringly monotonous... And although hard-core fans will love this whatever, and good luck to them, I'd rather set fire to my own hair than ever have to sit through it again. It would be over quicker, at least.

While it isn't a consummate movie, Les Misérables will stir a younger generation of fans with its glitz and charm and perhaps pioneer a new style of movie musicals.

Hugh Jackman delivers a muscular, earnest performance that holds together this diverse ensemble cast - which includes predictable but welcome comic relief from Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter - for the full 158min.

Ultimately, Tom Hooper's experimental 'Les Misérables' is a jigsaw of performances with no central momentum that is both exhaustive and exhausting.

"Les Misérables is an entertaining retelling of the stage musical that might not have aged perfectly, but still knows the strengths of this story."

Aside from all the handheld shots and absence of wide shots for such a grand production, quite good. Way too much hate for Rusty. He was a good contrast to the Jacked Man.

An absolutely excellent movie. It's quite long, but worth watching every minute (excluding one agonizingly long, depressing song toward the beginning. Sorry, Anne Hathaway.) The characters are all dynamic, the acting is exquisite, the writing is fantastic, the soundtrack is primo, and the plot is soulful, engaging, and plum excellent. My only real critique is 2.5 characters died of sadness. I assume that that's because it's hard to write a song where Hugh Jackman sings about how he's dying of pneumonia. Or perhaps the book is just like that. (I have not read it, so I cannot vouch for the accuracy of the movie to the book, but the film is so excellent that now I WANT to read it.) Overall, an utterly fantastic movie, that I fully intend to rewatch over and over again. And I'm not particularly even a fan of musicals, and yet I consider this one of my favorite films.
