After 19 years as a prisoner, Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman) is freed by Javert (Russell Crowe), the officer in charge of the prison workforce. Valjean promptly breaks parole but later uses money from stolen silver to reinvent himself as a mayor and factory owner. Javert vows to bring Valjean back to prison. Eight years later, Valjean becomes the guardian of a child named Cosette after her mother's (Anne Hathaway) death, but Javert's relentless pursuit means that peace will be a long time coming.

It's just so soaringly monotonous... And although hard-core fans will love this whatever, and good luck to them, I'd rather set fire to my own hair than ever have to sit through it again. It would be over quicker, at least.

Aside from all the handheld shots and absence of wide shots for such a grand production, quite good. Way too much hate for Rusty. He was a good contrast to the Jacked Man.

So this is three? stories. The little match girl. The prodigal son? another one. Or something. I think any telling of this, and this one's fine, has the problem of ensuring that the long and obsessive chase between Javert and Valjean doesn't become ridiculous. Or something.

This musical is the only example of repeat miracles I can think of: movies that make me cry once are statistically rare, but here I was sobbing on about five separate occasions. To lose none of its impact in the translation to the silver screen is even more extraordinary. I'm not even hopping on the Russell Crowe bandwagon - of course, he was the musical weak link, but his formidable, menacing screen presence is very much there. Samantha Barks is the standout in a reprised performance that should come to define her entire career. Anne Hathaway's depiction of Fantine's horrifying suffering bagged her one of the most deserved Oscars of recent times. This whole story is a beautiful odyssey of hope and redemption amidst brutal times or, as somebody else succinctly put it, a ' timeless testament to the human spirit.' I couldn't agree more. One of my very favourite musical films and at time of writing I'm giving myself a good kicking for only bestowing 4.5 stars the first time around.
