Critics Consensus

The transition from novel to film is awkwardly executed, and Sedgwick's character, despite the attempts to make her sympathetic, merely comes across as creepy and crazy.

Even though Loverboy is only 86 minutes long, as it wore on, I wore out. Go to Full Review

There is a lot of skill on display here and a great performance but I can't recommend it either because this woman is so clearly and obviously abusive and insane. Go to Full Review

First-time director Kevin Bacon (Mr. Sedgwick) cleverly maintains a balance of discomfiting and familiar by jumping nimbly around Emily's life. Go to Full Review

Remarkably unsubtle and by-the-numbers, and thanks to some curious plotting, it's also a bit shrill and unpleasant. Go to Full Review

TheMovieSearch R @TheMovieSearch Aug 28, 2026 Loverboy is a very strange and intense movie. It follows a mother who desperately wants a child but struggles to have one for many reasons. When she finally becomes a mother, she becomes extremely protective and controlling, to the point where she doesn’t want anyone else around her child. She eventually takes one of the most devastating steps a parent could ever take involving their own child. I won’t reveal what happens because I don’t want to ruin the film, but I will say that her behavior becomes incredibly disturbing. If you’ve ever known an extremely controlling parent, this movie takes that behavior to another level. I thought the entire cast was incredible, and I especially enjoyed the smaller moments with Sandra Bullock. Even her brief appearance brought a little extra star power to the film. Ultimately, Loverboy is uncomfortable, emotional, and sometimes difficult to watch, but that’s also what makes it memorable. See more

May 20, 2019 This movie was creepy, it stayed with me in a bad way. I love Kyra Sedwick and Kevin Bacon though. Sedwick plays a helicopter mother to her son, she has flashbacks to her creepy childhood a movie to see at your own will. I'd not watch it again kind of a hard watch. See more
Aug 22, 2016 This is hands down one of the most stomach turning pieces of shits I've ever suffered every minute through. A worthless adaption with horrible writing, horrible characters and the most over romantizised, painful and disturbing endings I've ever seen! If I had a hammer and enough time, I would destroy every copy and burn them. See more
