Alex (Ben Stiller), Marty (Chris Rock) and other zoo animals find a way to escape from Madagascar when the penguins reassemble a wrecked airplane. The precariously repaired craft stays airborne just long enough to make it to the African continent. There the New Yorkers encounter members of their own species for the first time. Africa proves to be a wild place, but Alex and company wonder if it is better than their Central Park home.

Critics Consensus

Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa is an improvement on the original, with more fleshed-out characters, crisper animation and more consistent humor.

The sequel to the 2005 Madagascar is as spunky, witty and funny. However, what's a let-down perhaps is the story, which takes the same course as The Lion King, with a detour towards Shrek thrown in.

It's a very handsome production, and a pretty funny one, too, which will keep audiences of all ages -- except perhaps the most cynical -- thoroughly entertained.

5-year-olds will eat it up, teenagers will say it's kids’ stuff, and adults duped into chaperoning a trip to the movie theater will struggle to make it through.

Marginal improvement over what its predecessor tried to achieve on an opportunistically wider canvas with stellar voice talents granting hilarity onto the delighted viewer who’ll feel how pleasantly wholesome the return is. (B+)

Boring with no taste to it. Annoying jokes, nothing good about it

Felt like the first film, the only difference was that the actual story took a bit too long to get going again, and once it did, I was like "that's all?" At least it has the meme that everyone prolly knows what I'm talking about.

Still brilliant, and then some ... Growing from strength to strength. Story and directing still great, amazing cinematography and stunning visuals. More "matured" characters with intense interaction between them. Usual sharp wit, action, fast pace, drama, calamity, suspense, intrigue and more emotion than before. Whole stellar cast still excels in character, very convincingly. Highly entertaining and captivating
