See more Thiago B @RT84504788 Nov 30 Many post-apocalyptic films focus their plot and narrative exclusively on survival, aiming primarily to shock and entertain the audience with explicit violence, while neglecting character development, which is always placed in the background and never truly explored. Maggie came to challenge this formula, offering a different proposal from what we've seen throughout the years, since George A. Romero's golden era. The story introduces us to Arnold Schwarzenegger's character, Wade Vogel, a veteran farmer, and his daughter Maggie Vogel (played by Abigail Breslin). The film explores the emotional relationship between father and daughter during their final moments together, caused by the Necroambulist virus infecting Maggie's body (a virus that slowly erodes her impulses, stripping away her humanity, independence, and sense of morality). The emotional weight carried by this film is extraordinary. The casting choices are perfect, and the chemistry between father and daughter works flawlessly. You truly buy into the idea that this universe is real and that its historical events could have existed. The dialogues are well-written, although at times they lose focus, slightly undermining the emotional depth of certain scenes and leaving them somewhat clumsy. The gas station scene, for instance, feels unnecessary; it could have been cut entirely, as it adds nothing of real relevance to the story's progression. The direction and editing are outstanding (easily the film's greatest strengths). However, the movie relies heavily on its soundtrack. Nearly every scene includes background music, which often feels unnecessary when trying to create an atmosphere of tension, anguish, or emptiness. As a result, this constant musical presence sometimes disconnects the viewer from the moment, exposing awkward details that would otherwise go unnoticed if the immersion had been maintained. The makeup of the infected is impressively realistic, effectively selling the illusion that these people are truly afflicted by the virus that brought about the apocalypse. Yet, despite its many positive elements (all of which serve as narrative tools), they also contribute to a sense of monotony and exhaustion, making the experience feel repetitive and dull over time.
