A Russian Jewish girl (Christina Ricci) is separated from her father in 1927 and escapes to England, where she's rechristened Suzie. She grows up to be a singer in a Parisian theater populated by a glamorous Russian dancer (Cate Blanchett), an egotistical Italian tenor (John Turturro) and a handsome Gypsy horseman (Johnny Depp). When the Nazis invade France, however, Suzie's life is suddenly in danger, and she attempts to flee to the United States, where her father moved years earlier.

Critics Consensus

The storyline is overwrought and awkward, and the audience is distanced from the flatly drawn characters.

Potter eschews drama for posing, politics for postulating, and provides enough symbolic broad strokes to gag a magic realist. Go to Full Review

It's as though we're being dared not to take the movie seriously, although nothing but the pre-Holocaust setting compels you to do so. Go to Full Review

Caitlin T @rainbowcito 5 days ago I will never understand the horrendous reviews for this absolute masterpiece. The Man Who Cried is a beautiful, heart-wrenching film with a supremely gorgeous soundtrack and is a masterclass in moody art direction. The ending breaks my heart every time. See more

Wouterius V @TonyvV Mar 8, 2026 Loved this movie. It captures the desperation of pre-war Europe, that most cannot imagine. Many criticize it for inplausibilty, but this is intentional. It is more like a nightmare with characters moving through dark scenes they have no control over. Ricci, a Jewish girl, is the common thread. Early in the movie poverty and racism separate her from her father in a heart-tugging scene. Later the pograms in Russia separate her from her remaining family. Ricci moves through a landscape that is sad and dangerous with a secret that she is Jewish. This creates tension but also hope for a happy outcome. In Paris Ricci rooms with Blanchett, who is over the top flirtatious but with an agenda of finding a man to rescue her from her dark prospects. All performances are stellar, the music is beautiful, and the filmography captivating. I think those looking for realism should watch a documentary, but if you want a movie that will make you feel, The Man Who Cried fills that bill. See more
