After the death of his older brother Joe, Lee Chandler (Casey Affleck) is shocked that Joe has made him sole guardian of his teenage nephew Patrick. Taking leave of his job as a janitor in Boston, Lee reluctantly returns to Manchester-by-the-Sea, the fishing village where his working-class family has lived for generations. There, he is forced to deal with a past that separated him from his wife, Randi (Michelle Williams), and the community where he was born and raised.

Perfect movie for a gray day! This film feels a little long and the editing/cinematography could use some work, but the acting is award-worthy! It is definitely Casey Affleck's best work and also a wonderful performance by Lucas Hedges!

I'm still dealing with this churning sea of a movie a couple days later. The video didn't play the Lonergan commentary it promised but the main special features helped me savor the film further with insightful comments by all principal actors and Lonergan too!There's a layered wealth of emotional depth woven through the film, with flashbacks that carry you deeper into the web. The crucial scene where Lee runs into his now divorced wife is lacerating in the way the director guides and allows the actors to struggle to an emotional climax. We learn that Lonergan called "cut" at one point when, Michelle Williams reveals, he was crying during the scene. I feel that my life has been changed by this film. The experience of fire will never be the same again.
