Critics Consensus

Banderas returns as an aging Zorro in this surprisingly nimble, entertaining swashbuckler.

The Mask of Zorro stands as a pointed riposte to those who say they don't make 'em like that anymore.

The story is not important. The clash of swords, the leaps, the tumbles -- it's all very nice. But after 136 minutes, it becomes a bit much.

There are no clever ground-breaking effects, just lashings of good clean fun with desperately devilish baddies, and good guys so fantastic, so clever and witty, that they make you want to weep with pleasure.

A period adventure, centred on action sequences created with practical effects (explosions, real horses, stunt doubles) in locations that exist in real life. [Full review in Spanish].

“The Mask of Zorro” is easily the best action adventure film of the summer. It has everything you could desire, great acting, great romance and an exciting plot.

A terrifically entertaining movie, and at heart, an old-fashioned adventure.

Archetype adventure and solo hero movie. They reuse some elements but highly entertaining. Three leads ooze charisma. Mexican pride!

This movie caught all my attention when I was young and I loved the action in it mixed with some comedy. And Antonia Bandelas was definitely the man for this role. Great movie.

Greetings from Lithuania. "The Mask of Zorro" (1998) is a superb entertainment, a real crowd pleaser. Made with energy, with and superb performances all over around it's a great flick from start till finish. Like many great revenge stories, this one has everything - a progressing hero, a wonderful central character and so on. "The Mask of Zorro" for me was a near perfect adventure film from the late 90's. I was a teen when this came out and i saw it many times. For me this film has a big nostalgia factor. The story is fantastically simple yet universally involving. Music by James Horner was amazing. Three great actors Antonio Banderas, Anthony Hopkins, Catherine Zeta-Jones are splendid here and Stuart Wilson was a superb villain. And leave it to a great Martin Campbell ("Casino Royale", "Goldeneye") to craft such an entertaining adventure film. Overall, "The Mask of Zorro" is a great adventure movie for me personally.
