Marco L @decatur555 Oct 22, 2026 A very powerful, intense and deeply sad film about a mother and son who love each other enormously but cannot save each other. Steve is not just a "problematic boy": he is explosive, vulnerable, dangerous and desperate for affection, and every scene with him feels tense. Diane is the film's heart, exhausted and chaotic but refusing to let go of her son. Kyla brings a fragile, temporary sense of family, and the music is wonderful: "Colorblind" gives the film tenderness, while the "Wonderwall" scene, with Steve opening the frame, is unforgettable. The square format makes their lives feel trapped, so when the screen widens you breathe with them. The supermarket scene is devastating, but the mother's imagined future for Steve broke me most: the life she needs to believe he could have. It is excessive and melodramatic, yes, but also brutally alive. Sometimes love is enormous, but life is bigger. Sure, it runs a little long and gets hyper-dramatic at times, but the sheer emotional honesty carries every single frame. When the screen physically expands during that burst of joy, it’s pure cinematic magic. The ending is an absolute gut-punch that left me completely speechless - a deeply moving, thought-provoking look at love, burden, and survival. Acting is poorly overdone. Characters aren't believable. Wouldn't watch if I was paid $1k. It stands out for its incredible story and its complex yet deeply human characters. The performances are one of its greatest strengths, because everything feels natural and authentic, making it easy to empathize with what the characters are going through. The direction is also remarkable. The use of the 1:1 aspect ratio is not just a visual choice, but a powerful narrative tool, especially in the moment when the frame changes and the emotion becomes even stronger. It is one of those technical decisions that truly adds meaning to the story. The music also deserves praise, with song choices that perfectly capture the film’s emotional intensity, especially during the ending. Mommy is a stunning and unforgettable film, and I regret not having watched it sooner. See more Read all reviews
