Critics Consensus

Despite an effective otherwordly atmosphere and appropriately cheesy visuals, Mortal Kombat suffers from its poorly constructed plot, laughable dialogue, and subpar acting.

Let's just say that Mortal Kombat is "way cool" (something I am rarely inclined to do) and leave it at that. Go to Full Review

The result has a pleasing, unpretentious B-movie verve, putting a new sheen on the old-time Saturday-matinee serial. Go to Full Review

Mortal Kombat isn't the worst movie of the year, but it's easily the most forgettable. Go to Full Review

It’s two hours of impressive martial arts, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa’s exceptional performance as Shang Tsung, and the head-bumping riff of Techno Syndrome. Go to Full Review

This picture is based on a best-selling video game, though I could believe that it was inspired by Jayne Austin's novel "Sententiousness and Insensitivity." Go to Full Review

Mortal Kombat is probably the best film ever derived from a video game, but that's a pretty small pea patch of which to be the prince. Go to Full Review

Eric 07/20/2024 My theater played the wrong movie. The 2021 version was shown. See more Ben W 09/15/2023 Super fun and cheesy! Great time! See more Drew M. @Stonehands211 3d The best video game adaptation of all time. Still rules. See more Andrew R @HorrorMovieLover458 6d Such a fun movie. Just low budget fun. If you like the games, this is a must watch...even if reptile's cgi is rough See more Matt J @RT95392035 Apr 29 I thought this movie was great for the time it was made. I was more of a Street Fighter player at the arcades back in the day, but I liked this a lot more than the Street Fighter movie that was done around the same time. If you are into the old fighting games, or just a fan of cheesy fighting movies, it's worth a watch for sure. If not, move along... See more Yash B @yashbansal Apr 27 "Mortal Kombat" is a campy 90s movie that doesn't really age that well. I feel like the goofiness can be enjoyable at times, but the movie was kind of boring. I felt that even with the fight scenes, I just didn't care that much. I didn't grow up playing the games, so I can't speak to how this is as an adaptation, but as a movie, it is just not good to me. Overall, it is a fascinating movie because of how bizarre it feels in the modern age, but it is also most certainly a bad one that is too boring to even enjoy as something silly or fun.
