Critics Consensus

With Robin Williams' affecting portrayal as a Russian immigrant at the center of its fish-out-of-water story, Moscow on The Hudson soars with an abundance of laughs and heart.

[This] is the kind of movie that Paul Mazursky does especially well. It's a comedy that finds most of its laughs in the close observations of human behavior, and that finds its story in a contemporary subject Mazursky has some thoughts about.

[Maria Conchita Alonso] is simply enchanting. The movie, which has its dull patches due to the lack of any sort of dramatic conflict, automatically bursts into life the minute this delightfully vivacious, dark-haired beauty appears on camera.

Though some of the movie may strike us as naïve or false, we're pulled along by the sweet dreams of a director with so broad and instinctive a sense of human solidarity.

This might be a little dated now but still a little topical. Robin Williams is excellent here disappearing into his role with perfect Russian dialect. This is a patriotic, funny, charming and truthful movie about immigration and an interesting romantic comedy, drama. A pro America movie that doesn’t preach and works very well.

Some important themes about coming to America for freedom and how too much freedom is also an issue. The line, “my only freedom was my own misery, but at least I could control it and own it.” So much more could have been done with it, but it was sidelined with silly 80s humor and culture. I did appreciate those parts though too. Williams was good. RUS
