John B @RT56492114 Nov 25 Mr. Baseball is one of the best film depictions I've seen of life in modern Japan for a non-Japanese gaijin, especially a standard American. Tom Selleck's character goes through a typical culture shock sequence, much like the five stages of grief, and comes out the other end a much better man because of it. And as a former resident of Japan, I can attest that his collisions with Japanese culture are hilarious and on target. Two favorites are the shiatsu massage he gets after a workout (he screams YEEOOOWWWW! while his teammates howl with laughter). And after trying to macho-bully his assistant, he has to ask for her help -- "where do I live?!?" For years I've recommended "Mr Baseball" and Juzo Itami's "A Taxing Woman" to anyone interested in modern day life in Japan as a gaijin. I still recommend those two. It does a pretty good job of showing the meeting of culture and play and job of baseball reality for an American play in Japan. Good watch.
