Critics Consensus

On paper, Mrs. Doubtfire might seem excessively broad or sentimental, but Robin Williams shines so brightly in the title role that the end result is difficult to resist.

Much of it feels synthetic and crude, more the result of engineering than inspiration. The [filmmakers] put a commercial glaze on everything, as if a future TV series were taking over the movie even as it was unreeling in the projector.

This comedy's warm and soothing nature will give mainstream audiences in these dysfunctional-family times a perfect holiday uplift.

Although overly sappy in places and probably 20 minutes too long, this Robin Williams-in-drag vehicle provides the comic a slick surface for doing his shtick, within a story possessing broad family appeal.

Rather than settling for cheap laughs, the film invests in a deeply felt story about fatherhood, family, and the messy realities of divorce.

I honestly can’t imagine anyone thinking this is a bad movie. Reading some of the critics who panned it, you’d think they went in expecting Ingmar Bergman rather than a family comedy. Obviously, its target audience is younger teenagers, and its greatest strength is that it’s something the entire family can enjoy together. Robin Williams’s genius is on full display, delivering a performance that is as hilarious as it is endearing. The message is reassuring, heartwarming, and ultimately quite touching. It knows exactly what kind of movie it wants to be and succeeds beautifully. Unless, of course, you happen to be an angry member of the kitchen staff.
