Everyone in the Portokalos family worries about Toula (Nia Vardalos). Still unmarried at 30 years old, she works at Dancing Zorba's, the Greek restaurant owned by her parents, Gus (Michael Constantine) and Maria (Lainie Kazan). After taking a job at her aunt's travel agency, she falls in love with Ian Miller (John Corbett), a teacher who is tall, handsome and definitely not Greek. Toula isn't sure which will be more upsetting to her father, that Ian is a foreigner or that he's a vegetarian.

Critics Consensus

Though it sometimes feels like a television sitcom, My Big Fat Greek Wedding is good-hearted, lovable, and delightfully eccentric, with a sharp script and lead performance from Nia Vardalos.

Second City alum Nia Vardalos stars in this ethnic comedy, which she also wrote -- an ambitious way to break into a leading role; too bad the results are insubstantial.

Endearing eccentricities, such as Toula's father's improvisational Greek etymologies of words like "kimono" and his reliance on Windex for a range of external-use medicinal purposes, help humanize the characters.

Vardalos earned an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay (odd, since it’s clearly an adaptation), but her appealing performance is better than her script.

The movie is really little more than an extended pilot episode for the short-lived sitcom it would later become, but it’s good comfort food and has some inspired comedy moments.

I remember watching this for the first time and not quite understanding the cultural relevance it would have. It’s incredibly quotable “you don’t eat no meat?!?? That’s okay I make lamb”. It made an entire generation of immigrants realize that the interracial marriage struggles was universal in almost every community. Very few films bind you to people, I remember watching this with my cousin and knowing every line of the film.

It isn’t holding up as well on repeated viewings. It still has plenty of charm, but this time it felt less magical and more like a 1990s TV sitcom. The print looked great, and the bouzouki music added a nice Greek flavor.

Yeah, it may be cheesy and predictable but WHO CARES!?!?!?! Sometimes we need a movie like this once in a while. The story is so cute and I love all the characters! Toula Portukalos it’s such a relatable character. You can empathize with her feeling like she was different from others because she comes from a Greek family background. Personally, I’m not Greek I’m half French, but I still found her very relatable nonetheless. Alexander Janko’s score in this is pretty good too in my opinion. So,…yeah. If you want a nice romance movie that doesn’t take itself too seriously then I would say go watch it!

It's funny and sweet. A big family can be a blessing...and a curse. Sometimes I wish my family was a big one.
