I can remember seeing Jayne Mansfield on Ed Sullivan - everybody watched Ed Sullivan. And, yes, Groucho was kinder than Jack Parr. The story is plainly - and wonderfully - told w/o sensationalizing Jayne or silly sentimentality. And I can remember hearing on the radio the news of her accident. She was decapitated. See more Michael D @MichaelX Jan 21 I went into "My Mom Jayne" knowing almost nothing about Jayne Mansfield beyond the lurid urban legend surrounding her death, which turns out to be untrue, and the iconic photo with the Sophia Loren side-eye. Directed by her daughter, Mariska Hargitay, this deeply personal documentary is touching, authentic, and unexpectedly grounded. What struck me most was the sheer normalcy and decency of the extended family, which gives the film a bittersweet honesty rather than melodrama. Hargitay, who was only three when her mother died in a tragic car accident in Louisiana, approaches the story with a light hand and genuine curiosity. She coaxes real emotion from siblings and relatives without ever tipping into sentimentality, crafting a portrait of a woman she barely knew but clearly yearns to understand.
