Critics Consensus

Visually striking but thinly scripted, Oblivion benefits greatly from its strong production values and an excellent performance from Tom Cruise.

It's a shame that its poor editing inhibits what could have been a memorable movie.

Here's the trouble with mainstream science fiction filmmaking these days: there's no expectation that an audience is capable of putting things together or waiting for a payoff.

The story that eventually surfaces is no where near as interesting as the mesmerizing look of the film.

With more mature direction from Kosinski, a skilled star in Cruise, beautiful effects work, and a bold, if retread, narrative, 'Oblivion' is exactly the type of heady popcorn flick the sci-fi genre needs.

There’s no denying that Oblivion is derivative.... But director Joseph Kosinski, adapting his own graphic novel, sure knows how to make it look beautiful and evocative.

Oblivion’s characters do little more than service the puzzle-based plot, leaving the sometimes predictable dialogue to the actors to enhance.

This visually stunning film in which TC has another try at science fiction. It’s a good film.

Its story was too much for its own good but it was satisfying nonetheless. Not an all time great sci-fi but it was sufficient.

The reviews on this website—from both the so-called critics who keep citing ‘2001’ to put up a facade of expertise in science fiction, and the general audience who clone (spoiler alert!) the critics—are all proof of why you should not read /any/ movie review before watching a film. Never, ever let them extinguish the joy that is watching cinema, which should precede any attempts at what would likely end up as trite analyses. As a consumer of science fiction—its dystopias, its possibilities, and the worlds it creates—I simply couldn’t recommend this film enough.

The best part was hearing Ramble On by Led Zeppelin. It summarized the movie which rambled on and on.
